What to do

Set a timer for 10 minutes and tidy one area of your home or workspace. Do not organise or deep-clean — just put things back where they belong.

Why it works

Reduces visual clutter (shown to increase cortisol), improves focus and cognitive performance in the subsequent work session, prevents the accumulation of disorder that leads to overwhelming 'big clean' tasks.

Research backing

The same Psychological Science research on environmental order found that visual clutter is associated with elevated cortisol and reduced cognitive performance, while time-boxed tidying tasks show substantially higher completion rates than open-ended cleaning sessions.
