What to do

Find one item in your home today that you do not use, need, or love — and either throw it away, donate it, or sell it. Just one thing per day.

Why it works

Prevents accumulation of clutter, reduces decision fatigue (fewer possessions = fewer decisions), improves sense of calm and spaciousness, and creates a decluttering identity over time.

Research backing

Research on decision fatigue, notably by psychologist Roy Baumeister, shows that the number of possessions and choices in daily life directly taxes mental energy, supporting the premise that fewer, more intentional possessions reduce daily cognitive load.
